Self Insurance an Option for Small Employers in Certain Markets

Several insurers are offering self insurance to smaller employers as a way to administer health insurance programs.
There has been a trend in recent months to offer self insurance to smaller employers. As reported in the May 28, 2013 Wall Street Journal. large health insurers like Humana and UnitedHealth Group are offering these programs in certain markets. In the Kaiser Family Foundation 2012 Employer Health Benefits Survey it was found that only 61% of small employers (3-199 employees) offered health insurance. Depending upon the employer demographics, the self insurance alternative may be an important way to limit the cost of health care for their workers under Obamacare.
