Study of Prescription Drug Use in the United States
The use of prescription drugs is a major expense for treatment of most legacy and chronic claims. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the authors describe an increase in overall use from 1999-2012.
The authors studied data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to determine prescription drug use from 1999-2000 to 2011-2012. The results indicate an increase in overall use of prescription drugs among US adults between 1999-2000 and 2011-2012 of 8%, with the use of 5 or more prescription drugs increasing 6.6%.
